Oh, pleasure. Desire. What do you long for? What do you want? Why do we indulge in labours of enjoyment?

Perhaps there is pleasure — whatever that may be to you — in posing questions without expecting rewarding answers. Instead, consciously navigating a vastness, a means without an end. No culmination, no climax. Does pleasure exist without fulfilment? Are any of these words even useful to us? Does language still serve us? Are we allowed to discard it, cast it aside? Is there violence in this? Why does violence feels good? Friction. Danger. Why do we feel dirty?

Under the guidance of choreographer and dramaturg Carolina: Helena, Junes, Sarah, Ben, Lines, Otta, Nike, Lena, Simon and Lou share memories, experiences, desires and needs. They read Anaïs, Elizabeth, Clarice, Michel, Giulia, Octavia… They move through the confines of a designated space, learning what it takes to care for it, for themselves, for one another — and to be taken care of. They search for where they fit, where they don’t, and where they might.

This is an attempt to find a language, a physical practice of our own, that can hold the complexity, ambivalence and boundlessness of its subject: pleasure.

“Een ketel vol bijtende en ziedende theatraliteit!”

 

Nile Harris is een theatermaker en performer uit Miami, momenteel gevestigd in New York. Ondanks zijn jonge carrière is hij daar inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een fenomeen. In zijn scherpe, humoristische en onstuimige performances neemt hij de Amerikaanse cultuur onverbloemd op de korrel. Vulture-magazine typeert zijn werk treffend als: “een ketel vol bijtende, ziedende, werkelijk ‘gonzo’ theatraliteit die evenzeer bloedserieus als vrolijk zelf- (en iedereen-)spottend is.”

Nu komt Harris voor langere tijd naar Europa. Op uitnodiging van CAMPO werkt hij een maand lang in onze studio’s, geflankeerd door zijn vaste dramaturg en visueel ontwerper Dyer Rhoads. Samen onderzoeken ze hoe hun werk resoneert binnen de Gentse en Europese context. Het werk van Harris ontstaat steevast vanuit een confrontatie met institutionele kaders en door ontmoetingen met lokale kunstenaars. Als onderdeel van deze residentie zijn ook de dramastudenten van KASK uitgenodigd om mee te werken aan Harris zijn onderzoek.

Aan het einde van de maand openen we de deuren van het theater voor een work-in-progress. Een eerste blik op de vruchten van deze bijzondere ontmoeting. Grijp nu je kans om hun werk van op de eerste rij te ontdekken in Gent. Want deze kunstenaars zullen het hedendaagse theaterlandschap de komende decennia bepalen.
