Negative Space
Zwarte Zaal Louis Pasteurlaan 2 Gent
In the summer of 2014 Reckless Sleepers started building a new room, a white room. In the autumn of 2014 Reckless Sleepers will emerge out of this white room, a bit dusty, covered in bruises, and with something new to show you. We’ve been working on this new project Negative Space for a long time, in the last two years every time that we present Schrödinger we’ve been thinking about something else, something different something in the future. Another project, a new piece of work, a continuation and expansion of the scenes that we are already familiar with.
On stage is a white room, it might be upside down, we’re not sure that its the right way up, wether gravity works in this space the same as it does on the outside. There are hatches and doors, a way in and a way out, you can see inside it, but we can’t see you, we can’t see you because your in the dark, and we are in the light. The space, the negative space, is white, sitting inside a dark black room, a theatre, a black hole, we all occupy that big space. There is a theory that at the centre of our Galaxy, is a super massive black hole, we can’t see it, but we can observe other matter that is around it. Of course it makes complete sense, everything in our galaxy revolving around a massive object, that you can’t see.
And we are interested in that, the stuff that you can’t see, and the stuff that you can’t measure, and with Negative Space we are going to start with those things that you (as an audience) cant see or hear in Schrödinger. Negative Space will not be an absolute negative of the existing piece of work, it will be something new, of course it will be something new, it will be something different, its made in a different time, with the same set of people yes, but all of whom have changed, the galaxy keeps turning, and some new things have appeared, and some old things have gone, or changed or moved into something else.
Of course we don’t exactly know what it is, or what it will be, but your going to have to trust us on this, there are things that we do know, Negative Space will be presented in a Theatre, it will be part of a festival, it will involve a group of artists who are performers, so we can predict that its going to be a piece of theatre, we expect that its going to last around about 1hr, there will be costumes and scenery and some lights – so that you can see what we are doing, there is going to be some sound, even noise, we will probably say some things, we’d like to have some drinks, we like to drink in our performances, we like to drink champagne, but we can never afford it, we’d like you to have a good time, to think about the project afterward, to talk with us afterwards, to send us messages after we have had a chat, to add to all those invisible things that surround this new piece of work.
We never really know what something will be, mean or do before we start making it. If we did we wouldn’t make it in the first place – because its already been done.In the summer of 2014 Reckless Sleepers started building a new room, a white room.
